There were originally seventeen cardboard boxes of mounted photographs, which were taken by Sir John Harris or his wife, Alice, on their visit to the Congo and San Thomé in 1911-1912, and used to illustrate their lectures or for exhibition purposes. These photographs were tied together in bundles, each photograph in a bundle having the same letter stuck on the back of the mount, presumably by Sir John Harris.
