'A Booke of Lieutenancie wherein is entred all lers directed to the L: Lieuteant of the County of Essex, concerninge Musters or Levyinge of forces, with all such proceedinges as have beene done and executed upon the said lers by his deputy Lieuteants' (p. 13). This is a letter-book of the deputy lieutenants of the county of Essex, 1608-31 and 1638-9, in which are entered all letters of the privy council to the lord lieutenant and deputy lieutenants, of the lord lieutenant to the deputy lieutenants, of the deputy lieutenants to the justices of the peace, borough magistrates and others, with the orders and notes of disbursements made by the deputy lieutenants, abstracts of musters, ratings for light horse, etc.

A similar letter-book of the justices of the peace for the county commences at p. 543 and is carried on to A.D. 1625, after which year the two letter-books are amalgamated. The volume consequently comprises the following sections:

  1. Letter-book of deputy lieutenants, 1608-31, in which is incorporated a letter-book of justices of the peace, 1625-31 (p. 13)
  2. Letter-book of justices of the peace, 1609-25 (p. 543)
  3. Letter-book of deputy lieutenants and justices of the peace, 1638-9 (p. 594)

(pages 628-710 are blank)

  1. At p. 393 is 'The relacon of the Landinge of or Armey in the Isle of Ree', 1627, and a list of casualties there
  2. At p. 488 is 'A breife declaracon concerninge the state of the Manufacture of Woolls in the Countie of Essex', 1629, printed in the Essex Review, 1908, p. 203
  3. The volume appears to be a private register kept by one of the deputy lieutenants (see p. 478)
  4. It has been described in the Essex Review, 1908, p. 157 by the rev. Andrew Clark, by whom an abstract of the book was presented to the Library in 1910 (nos. 35196-8)
