'The History of Gloucester, or the antiquities, memoirs, and annals of the ancient city and royal Dukedom of Gloster, from its origenal to this present time; by Abel Wantner, citizen of Gloster, 1714', beg. 'After such time as Julius Cæsar.'
This is however only the title of the first, out of five books. The main divisions are:
- Bk. 1, annals of the City (fol. 1), account of the Civil Government (fol. 46), churches, schools, hospitals and charities (fol. 48v), dukes of Gloucester (fol. 82), and lists of mayors with their arms, 1483-1713 (fol. 84);
- Bk. 2, the Abbey and Cathedral of Gloucester (fol. 93, cf. 282);
- Bk. 3, an account of the County of Gloucestershire, by hundreds and villages, etc. (fol. 129);
- Bk. 4, an account of the Diocese, similarly arranged (fol. 190a);
- Bk. 5, 'The Honourarie part', giving the names, seats, arms, etc., of the nobility and gentry of the county (fols. 237, 270v), with a list of high-sheriffs of the county, 1154-1712 (fol. 264).
