Two volumes of 'observations' on natural history:

  1. (MS. Eng. misc. d. 566/1) 'on horses, and domestic fowls', with fourteen water-colour drawings by Sawrey Gilpin, including (fols. 39v-41) a drawing of a dingo, with notes about it, 151 leaves.
  2. (MS. Eng. misc. d. 566/2) 'on turkies, ducks, and bees', with (fol. 135v) one water-colour drawing by Sawrey Gilpin, 143 leaves.

Custodial History

Each volume inscribed 'Vicar's Hill Aug. 18. 1803. These two volumes ... belong to my grandson William Gilpin of Cheam'; another inscription in d. 566/1, fol. ii, has been cut out. The first volume (d. 566/1) owned by Mrs. Ann Gilpin Russell.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

d. 566/1 bought, Sotheby's, 20 July 1981, lot 171 and d. 566/2 given in 1962.
