Memoranda comprising odd facts, facetiae, and extracts relating to Oxford, with a few of a more general kind, written by the rev. John Watson (d. 1875). Elections within the University, dates of public improvements, and curious notes of old Oxford men and times are specially prominent, and the period covered is in general about 1840-57, but in a wider sense from about 1600.
Among the pieces transcribed are:
- Greek iambics written by Charles Wordsworth and Henry George Liddell in the album of the Hospice at the Grimsel, Aug. 16, 1843 (fol. 9);
- Ode for the Chess Club, Brasenose College ... Feb. 14, 1811, by T. Dunbar (fol. 13);
- 'Gaisford wooing', a poem (fol. 15);
- 'The Government Inspector in Oxford', a poem of about 1853 (?: fol. 17v);
- a list of Oxford seceders to the Roman Catholic Church, 1843-55 (fol. 30);
- a list of the succession of fellows of Brasenose from 1802 to 1852 (fol. 53v).
The original pagination is from 249 to 416, but what are now fols. 35-42, 44-50, 56-62, 64-79, etc., are blank.
