Collections for a history of Cheshire, especially for the Hundred of Macclesfield and parish of Stockport, made in 1770-81 by John Watson (d. 1783), Rector of Stockport from 1769, and author of the History of Halifax, etc.
These consist chiefly of copies of deeds or old MSS., lists of the arms of gentry, pedigrees, drawings of seals, and the like, but pp. 247-568 are blank. Among the items are:
- (p. 14) a copy of a poem by Rich. Bostock (?) on the earls and barons of Chester (beg. 'When Saxon Harold');
- (p. 155) a list of pictures at Utkington house;
- (p. 184) an account of the earldom of Chester;
- (pp. 190, 209) surveys of Adlington house and Cheadle church.
There is an index to pp. 1-227 at p. 228, and many pieces are from papers of John Arden of Stockport.
