'The legend and defence of ye noble knight and martyr sir Jhon Oldcastel, by Richard James, bachelour of Divinitie and fellow of C.C.C. in Oxford' (p. iii). This is an annotated copy of a poem by Thomas Hoccleve in seventy-three stanzas of eight lines (beg. 'The ladder of hevene I meene charitee'):

  1. Headed 'Ceste feust faicte au temps que le roy Henri le cinquiesme, que Dieu pardoins, feust à Helmpton sur son primer passage vers Harflete' (p. 2), from a MS. in dr. Askew's library formerly in the possession of prince Henry son of James i
  2. Followed by 'Observations upon Hoccleve' by Richard James
  3. Preceded (p. 1) by a letter from Richard James 'to my noble friend Sr Henrye Bourchier', hence printed in Iter Lancastrense (Chetham Society, 1845), p. lxiv, which see for further information
