Custodial History

'This MS. belonged to Joseph Ames, ... was purchased of Lockyer Davies the bookseller by ... John Baynes ['Greys Inn, 1781'], ... & bequeathed by him to mr. [Joseph] Ritson, at whose sale, in Decemr 1803, I bought it ...', Douce's note, who complains that John Pinkerton printed it in his Scotish Poems 1792 from a transcript of this MS. (MS. Douce 309) 'in direct violation of his promise'.
