Custodial History
Manuscript 1418 acquired by the Bodleian Library (34)
Notes in the official catalogue, partly signed E. W. B. N., affirm that the volume was probably written at Old Minster, Winchester (or brought there from Canterbury), in A. D. 867, and that the Calendar at fol. 40 was copied from one written at St. Omer or St. Bertin).
[Ff. ii + 88 + ii. Art. 1 is from the year 229 of Diocletian, i.e. A. D. 513. Under 14. note also Brigid (Feb. 1), Patrick (Mar. 16--so Toul). Under 13 May S. Mary = S.M. ad Martyres, and 7 Mar. should be 7 Jun. By the 2nd hand are also obits of the monastery's priest, Aiulfus (Jul. 30), and its prior, Hugo (Aug. 2)--? Hugh, prior of Winchester (d. in 1120-26). 27 was composed in 616 or 617--see f. 71 at top. In its colophon, read Rægenboldus, after rentonia add 'civitate' (erased), and for 'item pro Baernini' read 'et pro Bærnini svū patrem'. In 30. original 'magnanime' is corrected in browner ink: at end 'viii nonaȝinta Fo' = 98 ff. showing the loss of a preliminary quire. My notes in the official copy contain many things of importance which cannot be given here. E. W. B. N.]
