Biographical / Historical
In late 1973, some members of staff in the Overseas Aid Department (later the Overseas Division) were brought together to form the 'Think Tank' (sometimes referred to as the 'Carpet Centre' because the office in Summertown, Oxford, was located above a carpet store) to consider technical and other matters and to support the work of the Department. By 1978, members of this group had formed a team calling itself the Technical Unit. By 1984, a Health Unit and an Emergencies Unit having also been created, Oxfam had formally established the Technical Unit as a specialist advisory unit in the Overseas Division. In 1993, the Health and Technical Units were replaced by the Public Health Team, which became part of the Emergencies (later Humanitarian) Department.
Arrangement
Some files in MS. Oxfam PRG/7/3 were added to by the Public Health Team, which in 1993 replaced the Health and Technical Units and formed part of the Emergencies (later Humanitarian) Department. Files created by the Technical Unit but significantly added to by the Public Health Team, and notebooks relating to trips made by Water Engineer, Paul Sherlock, are catalogued with reports and papers relating to Oxfam's humanitarian response programme in MS. Oxfam PRG/5/3 and MS. Oxfam PRG/5/7 respectively.
