Biographical / Historical
In the late 1980s the AAM's gold campaign became closely linked to the World Gold Commission, a group established in 1988 to encourage worldwide sanctions against South African gold sales. In addition to the AAM, the Commission's backers were End Loans to Southern Africa (ELTSA), the African National Congress (ANC) and the South West African People's Orgnisation (SWAPO) and funding for its research programme came from the United Nations Centre on Apartheid. The Commission presented evidence to international bodies, informed the public on the links between gold mining and the South African government and encouraged the use of non-South African gold in the jewellery industry.
