Biographical / Historical
John Churchill, First Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), commander of British and allied forces against the French during the War of the Spanish Succession from 1701, became known in France as 'Malbrouck'. This and variants passed into popular culture, as in the title of the song, 'Malbrouck s'en va t'en guerre'. Barber planned a study of the history and diffusion of the song.
