Biographical / Historical

Work on the rookery census was instigated by the Agricultural Research Council at the request of the Ministry of Agriculture. The British Trust for Ornithology was asked to find out whether the population of rooks was increasing to a significant extent and whether there had been any significant change in their feeding habits during the Second World War. Work began in 1944 at the Edward Grey Institute with a grant from the Agricultural Research Council.
