  2. [Item 2] Aug 1893-Apr 1894 (based in Macloutsie, Oct 1893 and Matabeleland, Jan 1894)
  3. [Item 3] Pocket diary containing pencilled entries made during the First Matabele War (of which item 2 is an expanded version) and intermittently while stationed at Macloutsie (23 May-25 Dec). Interspersed are personal notes and accounts, and a journal written up at intervals during the Jameson Raid and subsequently during internment and repatriation (29 Dec 1895-22 Feb 1896) (see also vol. 12, ff. 381-383) (based in Macloutsie, May 1894) [note that a fuller version of the Jameson Raid diary was lost in the 1950s following the death of L.S. le Roux, to whom it had been lent]
