Material collected by Colin Clarke while researching his doctoral thesis, 'Aspects of the Urban Geography of Kingston' (D.Phil. thesis, University of Oxford, 1967) which was published by the University of California Press in 1975 ( Kingston, Jamaica: Urban Devleopment and Social Change, 1692-1962). The thesis examined the social structure, social history and social geography of Kingston, focusing on the period of slavery, 1943 and 1960 (both census years). Clarke conducted fieldwork in Kingston in 1961 to gather a wide range of social and economic data.
