Library.

The library was regarded by Kendrew as an essential part of the laboratory from the beginning and a librarian (Mrs M. Holmes) was in place from 1975. When the Library Committee was set up in 1976 he took the view (note of 16 November 1976) that the library belonged to the scientific operation of the laboratory and not to the administration, and, since it did not belong specifically to any one of the divisions, that it should come directly under the Director-General.

Standing Advisory Committee.

This was set up in 1977 in accordance with Staff Regulations to "advise the Director-General on general questions concerning the personnel . . .", with two representatives elected by the staff and two nominated by the Director-General. The committee met for the first time on 31 May 1977.

Heads of Section meetings.

Folder H.316. Notices of informal meetings instituted by Kendrew from August 1978 for heads of sections in administration to discuss any topic of general interest or concern.

Building Maintenance.

Set up in August 1978 under Kendrew's chairmanship.

Canteen.

A provisional Canteen Committee was set up in September 1977 for the move into the new building and replaced by a new committee with "regional representatives" which met for the first time on 22 June 1978.
