There were small gatherings of specialists, meeting informally and by invitation to discuss a specific existing or proposed research topic. They were sometimes suggested by the PSAC or SAC as a means of clarifying the state of research and the appropriate level of involvement of EMBL; some were timed to coincide with meetings of the committee, whose members were in any case invited. They had an important function, in the early days in determining the EMBL research programme and subsequently in monitoring and diffusing information about its progress, and are therefore included here as an aspect of its committees and working groups.
