1969-1970.

Folder G.36. Arrangements for first plenary session of Conference, at CERN, 6-8 April 1970. Includes draft agenda, correspondence, letters of thanks, press release. At this meeting H. Voirier was elected President, A. Alline and C. Zelle were elected Vice-Presidents, and Kendrew was appointed Secretary-General of the Conference for three years. The revised laboratory proposal was favourably received and a Study Group was set up to meet in September and report to Conference at its November meeting. Full membership of EMBC for Israel was unanimously approved, a special clause being included in the Agreement (Art.III.2) that "the Conference may . . . permit other European States, as well as States which have made an important contribution to the work of EMBO from its foundation, to become Members by acceding to this Agreement after it has come into force". In his letter of 10 April to E. Vallotton Kendrew describes the meeting as "absolutely, in all respects, an enormous success and in addition it was one of the most friendly international meetings I have ever attended."

Meetings include those of EMBO Council and Laboratory Committee, of EMBC Study Group on laboratory and ad hoc Finance Committee, and meeting of EMBO with representatives of national scientific institutions.

Much of this material relates to meetings of the Conference "Bureau", the signing of the laboratory agreement, Conference officials, and the Working Group on the continuation of the EMBC Agreement after 1974. This was the "Andres" Working Group. Several of the folders include Kendrew's notes on matters under discussion.
