Folder F.183. General correspondence on laboratory matters, 1968. Includes letter from J. Wyman to O. Maaløe inviting him to become Chairman of committee in view of Kendrew's move to office of Secretary-General.

Folders F.184-188. Committee meeting at Linton, Cambridge (Kendrew's home), 16 March 1969.

Folder F.184. Correspondence January - March. Includes note on "Teaching at the EMBO Laboratory" by A.A. Buzzati-Traverso intended as Appendix to proposal document.

Folder F.185. Papers circulated for meeting, by Buzzati-Traverso, R.K. Appleyard, O. Maaløe and Kendrew, on revised laboratory proposal.

Folder F.186. Memorandum and minutes of meeting, drafts and circulars March - June, including copy of U.K. delegation note on the proposed laboratory presented at Interim Conference, June.

Folder F.187. Information on present and future plans for molecular biology in various European countries, assembled as a result of March meeting.

Folder F.188. Arrangements for meetings in March and June.

Folder F.189. Royal Society Discussion meeting, 21 October 1969.

This was a special meeting to discuss "greater participation by U.K. in the European Molecular Biology Organisation and particularly in its proposed laboratory or laboratories". The material is included in this sequence because it signals the concern in the scientific world at the laboratory proposal, and immediately precedes the "Konstanz meeting" at which the scientific programme was debated and which is referred to in some of the papers.

Folder includes invitation, list of participants, papers by Kendrew, M.G.P. Stoker, S. Brenner, draft contribution by Kendrew, note by C.H. Waddington, Kendrew's note of speakers and their opinions, report (apparently pirated) of meeting published in Nature, 224.

Folders F.190-194. The "Konstanz" meeting.

This symposium "to discuss the present and future development of molecular biology with special reference to a European laboratory", was held at Konstanz 27-30 November 1969. Attendance was by invitation and was not confined to EMBO members. The Laboratory Committee met twice during the meeting, on 27 and 30 November and at the second meeting working groups were appointed (on subcellular structures, cell genetics, instrumentation and computation) to prepare a more specific scientific programme for a revised laboratory proposal document. At the same meeting Kendrew agreed "to take on the directorship, if the project proved to be good".

The success of the "Konstanz" meeting was such that it became a generic term for intensive research meetings of this kind; the similar occasion at Haarlass near Heidelberg in 1971 was referred to as "Konstanz II" and there were plans for a "Konstanz III".

Folder F.190. Circulars, invitations, lists of participants, agenda, papers circulated to participants, photograph taken at meeting.

Folder F.191. Kendrew's notes for his opening remarks; "Notes on EMBO meeting . . . " including the two meetings of the Laboratory committee, unsigned but by J. Wyman.

Folder F.192. Working group on cell genetics. Correspondence and notes, including comments on working group's report sent to S. Brenner (Convenor).

Folder F.193. Working group on subcellular structures. Circulars only.

Folder F.194. Working group on instrumentation. Correspondence, notes, draft report by H.E. Huxley (Convenor).

Folders F.195-196.

Folder F.195. Correspondence and circulars on meetings, preparation and circulation of document, December 1969 - May 1970.

Folder F.196. Copy of revised proposal 16 February 1970, submitted to Conference as CEBM 70/12E, 76pp., and also of Kendrew's "Summary of EMBO's new proposals for an international laboratory", 1 January 1970.

Folder F.197. Correspondence and circulars, June - September 1970, regarding meeting of Laboratory Committee as part of joint EMBO/EMBC meeting at The Hague, 28 September - 1 October. At this meeting the Sites Subcommittee of the Laboratory Committee was set up.
