Adult and foetal sheep haemoglobin.

Folder C.16. Correspondence, 1946-1958, on research results, supplies, publications, some addressed to M.F. Perutz including letter 18 August 1947 from D.C. Hodgkin commenting critically on a draft paper on foetal haemoglobin (the joint paper by Kendrew and Perutz later published in Proc. Roy. Soc., 194, 1948).

Muscle.

Folder C.17. Correspondence, 1947, 1950-1954, with colleagues on methods, materials, results etc. Much of the material relates to collaborative work with H.E. Huxley and includes reference to their joint paper in Nature, 170, 1952 and to Huxley's work as Commonwealth Fund Fellow at MIT 1952-1954. Kendrew's letter of 23 December 1952 announces the successful crystallisation of "the most marvellous myoglobin crystals, from sperm whale of all odd places".

Protein solubility.

Folder C.18. Graphs and diagrams, n.d., c.1949.

Procollagen.

Folder C.19. Brief correspondence, 1951-1952.

Controlled shrinkage of protein crystals.

Folder C.20. Mainly 1952, relating to collaborative papers by Kendrew and Huxley. Includes manuscript draft of paper given to the Chemical Society Symposium, 7 February, on "Stepwise lattice changes in haemoglobin crystals", Huxley's heavily-corrected manuscript on "Discontinuous lattice changes in haemoglobin crystals" and final agreed draft for a version published under that title in Acta crystallogr., 6, 1953. A later letter (1965) on the work is also included.

Polypeptide chain configuration.

Folder C.21. Brief correspondence, 1953, 1973.

X-ray experiments.

Folder C.22. Correspondence, 1953, on request for Kendrew to take X-ray pictures of bacterial spores.

Folder C.23. Not used. Material transferred to Folder C.1.

Chymotrypsinogen.

Folder C.24. Data and calculations, mainly by M.M. Bluhm, related to collaborative paper with Kendrew published in Biochim. biophys. Acta, 20, 1956.

Folder C.25. Correspondence: "new proteins", 1947.

Correspondence: "new proteins", 1952. Includes a letter to H. Neurath from Kendrew 22 December 1952, writing enthusiastically about whale myoglobin: "we recently struck an absolute gold-mine in the shape of whale myoglobins of various species. One form - from sperm whale - is one of the most favourable protein crystals yet ..."

Folder C.26. Correspondence: "new proteins", 1953-1969.

Early research reports.

Folder C.27. Reports by Kendrew on his research, teaching and publications, 1946-1953.

"Report on crystallographic studies of protein carried out during 1946", addressed from Cavendish and Molteno Laboratories and perhaps intended for departmental annual report, January 1947.

Report to the Master of Peterhouse on first year of Research Fellowship July 1947 - June 1948; refers to "formation of MRC's Unit for the Study of the Fine Structure of Biological Systems, with Dr. M.F. Perutz as Director and myself as an independent part-time member", research on foetal haemoglobin, horse myoglobin etc. August 1948.

Molteno Institute report June 1947 - June 1948.

Reports to the Master of Peterhouse 1948-49, 1949-50 (refers to work on EDSAC), 1950-1951, 1951-1952 (papers with J.M. Bennett, H.E. Huxley, continuing difficulty in obtaining suitable crystals), 1952-1953 (final report on termination of Research Fellowship, granting of "unlimited tenure" by MRC, successful identification of "a very wide choice of experimental material, and all that remains is to exploit it.").
