- Folder 1: Biography. CV and autobiographical notes, including copies of Gowans's notes on stages of his career, posts held and important projects, as produced for transfer of the archive to the Bodleian Library, c.1914-2016; older biographical notes, CVs and publication lists; correspondence relating to general biography and to overviews of scientific work, c.1981-1983; proofs of entries for Gowans in Who's Who 2015; (newspaper) articles mentioning Gowans's work, 1974-2005.
- Folder 2: School and undergraduate university education. Whitgift Middle School, including school certificates, 1942, also correspondence with school, including interview for school magazine, 1963-1970; King's College Hospital Medical School, Bachelor of Medicine, 1942-1947; University of Oxford and Lincoln College, BA Physiology, 1947-1948.
- Folder 3: Student volunteer for medical relief at the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen, Germany, 1945. Correspondence and publications compiled by Gowans to document his experience, the work of student volunteers and later reflections on British relief operations in Germany in 1945.
- Folder 4: Commemoration of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen camp and the medical relief effort, 1995 and 2005, includes photographs and newsletter of Gedenkstätte Bergen-Belsen, 1999-2003, and correspondence with historians and biographers, c.2003.
