Biographical / Historical

During the early part of the twentieth century, petitions seeking to challenge the result of a parliamentary election were relatively commonplace. As the rulings of election courts had potential implications for the conduct of future campaigns, the Party published an irregular series under the title Notes and Judgements detailing the outcome of such cases in order to assist Conservative agents and workers.

Prior to the First World War this series was published by Conservative Central Office. Later editions appear to have been published by the National Unionist Association.

Reports on the proceedings and judgements of election courts were also a recurring feature of the Conservative Agents’ Journal during this period. For details of the archive’s holdings, see catalogue PUB/M - Conservative Party sectional newsletters, journals and periodicals.
