Biographical / Historical

Speakers’ Notes, later produced under the titles Candidates’ Notes (1991-1992) and Notes for Speakers (2010 - present), is a series of volumes published by the Conservative Research Department as a guide for party candidates. The preface to the 1979 edition explains to the reader that "these notes have been prepared to assist you in your campaign by providing short summaries of the main election issues and arguments, backed by relevant facts, figures and quotations." [Source: PUB 445/1].

Between 1979 and 1992 Speakers’ Notes were issued in ringbinders, in a similar format to later editions of the Election Manual, allowing for new material and area-specific supplements to be easily inserted at a later date.

The introduction to the most recent edition, produced in Sep 2018, states that the intention is to turn Notes for Speakers into a regular six-monthly publication, rather than producing volumes for each general election campaign.
