The Election Manual or, to give it its full title, A Practical Manual on the Conduct and Management of Parliamentary Elections, for the use of Conservative Candidates and Election Agents, was first published by Conservative Central Office in 1890. It was the Conservative Party's official guidance to local Party organisers in response to the Corrupt Practices Act of 1883, which imposed limits on election expenditure and enforced professional standards for the conduct of elections. As such, the Election Manual, revised and circulated prior to most subsequent General Elections up to 1987, lists the practical steps required to run an efficient and legal campaign within a parliamentary constituency, from doorstep canvassing to issuing election leaflets and making the official Declaration of Election Expenses.
In 1995 the Election Manual series was replaced by The Conservative Agents' Election Manual, which was produced in loose-leaf format to enable it to be updated with greater ease. The revised format also included information relating to the conduct of local and European election campaigns. This series in turn appears to have been discontinued at some point in the twenty-first century, but ad hoc guides to election law have continued to be produced at election times - the guide for the 2015 general election, published with the title Election Law - Common Sense Guide 2015 Edition, is included below.
