Vols. 1-2 (MS. Carte 277 and 278) are Carte's own most elaborate 'index' in his own handwriting, and comprise some volumes not now in the collection, while it omits some which are now there. At p. v. is a list of papers lent by Jernegan to Thomas Cadell, 13 Feb. 1773, and returned 14 Apr. 1775 (see p. 546, which bears Cadell's signature and writing). From p. 416 the catalogue is in a hand of 1770.
