Copies of letters and dispatches written by Arthur Capel, 1st Earl of Essex, when Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, 1672-77, arranged chronologically in five volumes (Aug. 5, 1672-end of 1673, 1674, 1675, 1676, and Jan. 1-Aug. 15, 1677 respectively). A full list and index of the 139 persons or public bodies to whom the letters are addressed are in manuscript in the Library. The ink in these volumes is in parts light and faint. Nearly all the letters of 1675 (only) were published in 1770.

Custodial History

Each volume bears the armorial bookplate of George Forbes Earl of Granard, dated 1832: a Forbes married a daughter of the third earl of Essex.
