Austin Richard William Low, known as Toby, was born in London in 1914 and educated at Winchester College and New College, Oxford. He was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple in 1939. Already a captain in the Territorial Army, he served in Greece, Crete, Tunisia, Italy and Austria during World War II, rising to the rank of brigadier and receiving many awards.

Toby Low entered Parliament as the Conservative member for Blackpool North in July 1945. In October 1951 he became parliamentary under-secretary for the Ministry of Supply and was promoted to minister of state at the Board of Trade in July 1954. He served as deputy chairman of the Conservative Party from 1959 to 1963 and became a close friend of Edward Heath. Low left parliament in 1962 and was created a hereditary peer, taking the title Baron Aldington of Bispham. He was chairman of the House of Lords Select Committee on Overseas Trade, 1984-1985, and of Sub-Committe A of the House of Lords European Communities Select Committee, 1989-1992.

Lord Aldington embarked on a varied and successful business career, becoming chairman of many companies and organisations including Grindlays Bank, General Electric Company, Sun Alliance, the Port of London Authority, the National Nuclear Corporation and Westland. He was also very involved in charitable organisations, particularly in his home county of Kent.

In the late 1980s Lord Aldington sued for libel Count Nikolai Tolstoy and Nigel Watts who had circulated a pamphlet accusing him of war crimes. The jury found in Lord Aldington's favour and he was awarded unprecedentedly high damages.

Lord Aldington died in December 2000.

For further details see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Felicité Ann Araminta Low, known as Araminta, was born in 1920, the daughter of Sir Harold MacMichael of the Sudan Civil Service. She was educated at the Francis Holland School in London and looked after by her grandmothers before joining her parents at Government House, Jerusalem, after her father became High Commissioner for Palestine in 1938. She was briefly married to Paul Bowman and worked for the army in Cairo during the war before returning to England and two years' employment at the BBC. In 1947 Araminta married Toby Low with whom she had one son and two daughters. She supported her husband in his political and business careers, including frequent travel, and was very involved in charitable and civic events and organisations, particularly in Kent where they lived. She bred Jacob Sheep and founded the Jacob Sheep Society in 1969, organised annual carol concerts with the Bach Choir and held roles with the Red Cross and Girl Guides in Kent. Araminta, Lady Aldington, died in 2012.
