Letters and printed ephemera (invitations, menus, cards, orders of service, concert and theatre programmes) relating to Montague Guest's social life within the circle of the then Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). Includes game cards from shooting parties at Sandringham, menus of dinners hosted by the Prince (some with Guest's autograph lists of attendees) and letters about social engagements, c.1875-1909.

Includes:

  1. red, white and blue ribbons with small bell pinned to card inscribed "Given me by HRH Princess of Wales at the Cotillon, March 10 1875" and small leather wallet inscribed "Montague Guest" and "Given to me by the Princess of Wales at a Cotillon at Lady de Rothschild's"
  2. menu from dinner at Royal Alpha Lodge and hand drawn seating plan for the initiation of Prince Edward of Wales into Freemasonry, 17 Mar 1885, with cutting from The Times describing the event, 18 Mar 1885
  3. glass container which housed a cigar smoked by the King on 26 March 1901, with accompanying note by Montague Guest
  4. letters/notes including from Alice Keppel, the Earl of Ilchester, the Earl of Dunraven, Lady Mary Ilchester, Victoria Sackville-West and Edith Castlereagh

Abstract

Letters and printed ephemera of Montague Guest, c.1880-1909.

Biographical / Historical

Montague John Guest (1839-1909) was educated at Harrow and served in the Rifle Brigade, 1855-1859, the Dorset Yeomanry, 1859-1889, and the Dorset Volunteers, 1865-1870. He was Liberal MP for Youghal in County Cork, 1869-1874, and for Wareham in Dorset, 1880-1885. He was Provincial Grand Master of Dorset Freemasons, 1877-1902, a member of Dorset County Council and Librarian of the Royal Yacht Squadron.
