Abstract

Correspondence and papers of Robert Wight as Chairman of the British Residents' Committee in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Biographical / Historical

Robert (Bob) Wight (1912-1987) served as an officer in the Palestine Police Force until 1940 and then became Nicosia branch manager of Spinneys, a British-founded supermarket chain in the Middle East. He was also oommissioned into the Army and served as a part-time volunteer in the Cyprus Regiment during World War II.

In 1953 Wight left Spinneys and opened his own drinks distribution business in Nicosia called Wights Limited. From 1959 to 1960 he was Chairman of the British Residents' Committee in Nicosia and, together with Douglas Walker-Brash, represented the interests of permanent civilian British residents following the Cyprus Emergency, campaigning for compensation for lost property and businesses and assistance with resettlement. He sold his business at the end of 1959 and returned to the UK, continuing to work in the drinks distribution industry until retiring in 1979.
