Comprises personal and official correspondence and papers created by, or relating to, Ernest Vasey. The majority of materials are related to affairs of government, 1936-1979, most concern East Africa, particularly Kenya, from the 1950s to mid 1960s. Personal materials consist of correspondence and the literary writings of both Ernest Vasey and his mother, namely plays, novels and poetry. Also included are biographical materials relating to Vasey, collated by Joan Karmali following his death.

Biographical / Historical
Ernest Albert Vasey (1901-1984) was a government minister in colonial Kenya, having previously served twice as Mayor of Nairobi (1941-1942 and 1944-1946). He was awarded a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 1945. Vasey later served as an advisor to the government of Tanganyika (1959-1962) and resident representative in Pakistan for the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (1963-1966).

The arrangement in which the papers were received has been preserved.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Donated by Sir Ernest Vasey in several accessions from 1971 to 1976. Additional papers deposited at SOAS by his biographer Joan Karmali were transferred to the Bodleian in 2008.
