    request

The majority of the research papers concern Heussler's last two books, on the Malayan (Malaysian) Civil Service. Work on the collection of materials was begun in 1969 by Hugh P. Bryson, a former member of the service and sometime Secretary of the British Association of Malaysia and Singapore. Together with a former colleague, David Gray, he sent out an appeal to all retired Malayan (Malaysian) Civil Service men to send him recollections of their work in Malaya (Malaysia), with any relevant private papers. In 1970, he approached Heussler with the suggestion that he might like to write up the history of the Malayan (Malaysian) Civil Service, and Heussler agreed. The papers that Bryson had collected were passed on, and these, together with later correspondence and material sent to Heussler, form the rest of this deposit. Each man whom Bryson contacted was given a separate file, but as in many cases these contained no more than one or two letters, a number have now been amalgamated.
