Correspondence concerning work as Chief Civil Affairs Officer in British North Borneo (Sabah, Malaysia) following the recapture of the territory from the Japanese, 1945-1947, with draft autobiography (typescript). The Collection, contained in one box, consists of files of personal and demi-official correspondence concerning his post-war work in Borneo. There is also a typescript dated 1964 of his unpublished autobiography.

Folder 1 (fols. 1-36):

Personal correspondence, notes, and memoranda about the organisation and functions of the British Civil Affairs Unit and the Services Reconnaissance Department, 13 Apr-20 Oct 1945. Marked 'Secret - Special Reconnaissance Department'. The British Civil Affairs Unit and the Services Reconnaissance Department were concerned with the restoration of order and economic stability under British authority following the expulsion of the Japanese from British Borneo. Personal correspondence, notes, and memoranda about the organisation and functions of the British Civil Affairs Unit and the Services Reconnaissance Department (contains loose papers found in folder 2), 20 Apr 1945-20 Jul 1946.

Papers consisting chiefly of personal correspondence, relating to the changeover from British Military Administration to Civil Government of Borneo, questions of the future political status of the territories, and the movements and future appointments of certain officers, 8 Sep 1945-11 Jul 1946. There are several letters, in this and other files, congratulating Macaskie on becoming a CMG (Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George). A draft memorandum on the future economic development of North Borneo (Sabah, Malaysia) outlines the immediate tasks confronting the Civil Government (fols. 3-7). Folder 4 (fols. 1-127):

Personal correspondence, largely between Macaskie, at Military HQ, British Military Administration (British Borneo), Labuan, the Colonial Office (J.J. Paskin, N.L. Mayle, and T.I.K. Lloyd), and the War Office (Brig. F.G. Drew), 4 Oct 1945-24 Jul 1946. The chief topics are problems of staff, shipping, and supplies, the withdrawal of the Australian forces when South East Asia Command took over on 10 Jan 1946, the cession of Sarawak to the Crown and the installation of Crown Colony Government, and plans for the restoration of North Borneo (Sabah, Malaysia). The file closes with letters and speeches expressing appreciation of Macaskie's work as Chief Civil Affairs Officer in Borneo, from Col. James Calder, Chief Secretary to the Government, North Borneo (Sabah, Malaysia), who took over from Macaskie, and from the Sultan of Brunei, the British Resident of Brunei, W.J. Peel, and Brig. Drew. Folder 7 (fols. 1-53):

File labelled 'DO letters to Colonial Office, 1st Oct 1947', containing demi-official correspondence relating to the war Damage Claims Commission, Borneo Territories, 23 Aug 1947-17 Mar 1951. An index lists 25 items, the last dated 7 Oct 1949, and there are five additional letters (fols. 2-7). The correspondence is almost entirely between Macaskie, in Jesselton (Kota Kinabalu), and Harold Palmer, Colonial Office. There are also memoranda on the terms of reference of the Commission (fols. 46-50).
