Abstract

Diary and photographs of Alan Greenwood Morkill.

Biographical / Historical

Alan Greenwood Morkill (1890-1986) was the eldest son of John William Morkill of Newfield Hall, Airton, West Yorkshire. He joined the Malayan (Malaysian) Civil Service in 1913 after working in the Colonial Office. During World War I, he served in the Royal Garrison Artillery for two years and then returned to Malaya (Malaysia) until 1928-1929. He was District Officer in a northern district at the end of his time in Malaya (Malaysia). During his service, he did a large amount of exploring and map-making, particularly down the central area of the peninsula.

After leaving Malaya (Malaysia), Morkill served as a Councillor for Kensington, worked for the Colonial Office, and was administrator of the Universities China Committee (Boxer Rebellion funds).
