Archive of John G. Lawrance, Northern Rhodesian (Zambian) civil servant.

Biographical / Historical

John G. Lawrance was born in 1922, and educated at Lowestoft Grammar School, followed by the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. He served in the Royal Navy from 1941 to 1948 and then entered the Colonial Civil service in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia). Between 1948 and 1951, he served as District Officer, Namwala and Mazabuka. In 1952, he moved on to be District Officer in charge of Namushakende Development Centre, Barotseland. This was set up to promote rural economic and social development, with a team of District Officers and technical officers. In 1956, he became District Commissioner, Senanga, Barotseland, and in 1959, Assistant Commissioner for Rural Development, Lusaka. Between 1961 and 1963, he was District Commissioner for Chinsali and District Commissioner for Serenje. In 1963-1964, he was Assistant Commissioner for Community Development, and then Acting Commissioner. Lawrance retired on Zambian Independence in Nov 1964.
