MSS. Ind. Ocn. s. 323/1 deals with his Governorship of North Borneo (Sabah, Malaysia) and includes four files of speeches on official occasions. MSS. Ind. Ocn. s. 323/2 and 3 contain files of official papers dealing with negotiations for the formation of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. MSS. Ind. Ocn. s. 323/4 and 5 contain articles and lectures on Malaysia by Sir William, tributes and brief biographies of prominent Malayans, transcripts, and notes for interviews with scholars and journalists, as well as correspondence on Malayan (Malaysian) history and politics. Much of this material relates specifically to the history of Singapore since 1942.

Biographical / Historical

Sir William Allmond Codrington Goode (1907-1986) was educated at Oakham School and Worcester College, Oxford, where he read Classics. He joined the Malayan Civil Service in 1931, studying law in his spare time. He was admitted to the Bar by Gray's Inn in 1936. From 1936 to 1939, he served as District Officer, Raub, and was appointed Assistant Commissioner for Civil Defence, Singapore, in 1940. After the colony's capitulation in 1942, he was taken prisoner by the Japanese and sent to Siam (Thailand) to work on the Burma railway. He remained in Malaya (Malaysia) after the war, and in 1948 became Deputy Economic Secretary to the Federation. In 1949, he was posted to Aden as Chief Secretary, where he also acted as Governor, 1950-1951. He returned to Singapore as Chief Secretary in 1953, and became the colony's last British Governor in 1957. In 1959, he became Yang di-Pertuan Negara of the State of Singapore and UK High Commissioner. From 1960 to 1963, he was Governor and Commander-in-Chief, North Borneo (Sabah, Malaysia). He was made GCMG (Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George) on his retirement in 1963. In 1938, he married Mary Harding. She died in 1947, and three years later he married Ena McLaren. He died on 15 Sep 1986.

The donation was accompanied by printed material, which was subsequently removed and added to the library's own printed stock.
