Abstract

Archive of Reverend Charles Kingsley Williams.

Biographical / Historical

Reverend Charles Kingsley Williams was educated at Birkenhead School and at the University of Oxford. He went to Merton College, Oxford, in 1904 on an Open Classical Postmastership, and afterwards to Mansfield College, Oxford, from 1908 to 1909. He was awarded the Junior New Testament (University) (Hall Houghton) Prize in 1909. For the next three years, he acted as Chaplain at Leys School, Cambridge.

In 1912, he was ordained and sent by the Methodist Missionary Society to Madras (Chennai) in India, where, in 1913, he became Vice-Principal of Wesley College. He remained in Madras (Chennai) until 1926, when he returned to England and married Margaret Elizabeth Bucknall.

In 1927, Williams was invited to go to the Gold Coast (Ghana) by the Reverend Alexander Garden Fraser, the principal of the Prince of Wales College in Achimota, Accra. Williams became Assistant Vice-Principal of the College, a post he held until 1938 when he returned to England. While in the Gold Coast (Ghana), Williams also served on the Sub-Committee of the Gold Coast Christian Council, which was appointed to enquire into common beliefs of witchcraft.

During World War II, Williams was appointed Assistant Master of Kingswood School, which had been evacuated from Bath to Uppingham (1941-1945). From 1948 to 1954, he edited The Daystar (United Society for Christian Literature), and from 1950 to 1960 he edited The Bulletin of Friends of Reunion. In 1957, he was asked to write a history of Achimota College, and the book was published by Longmans in 1962 under the title Achimota: the Early Years.
