Abstract
Archive of Bertram Osbourne Wilkin relating to medical service in Tanganyika (Tanzania) and Bechuanaland (Botswana).
Biographical / Historical
Bertram Osbourne Wilkin was born in 1889. From 1914 to 1920, he served in the Army, before going to Scotland for medical training. He qualified in Dec 1924, and in 1931 received the Diploma in Public Health from Edinburgh University.
In 1925, Dr Wilkin joined the Tanganyika Medical Service, and until 1948 he served mainly in the Northern Province (Moshi, Mwanza, and Dodoma); he became Senior Medical Officer in 1942. From 1949 to 1954, he was Medical Officer of Health to the Dar es Salaam Municipality, and was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire). On 1 Mar 1955, he was appointed Medical Officer of Health (MOH) to the Bechuanaland Protectorate (Botswana), where he remained until 1961.
