The collection comprises papers of Elwyn M. Evans (b. 1912), which relate to his time as Director of Programmes for the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, 1956-1959. Elwyn Evans was educated at Cardiff, Bridgend, and Oxford. He joined the BBC as an announcer and became a producer when the Welsh Region was formed. During the Second World War, he served in the Middle East for four years. In 1956, he was seconded to Nigeria, serving first as Deputy Director (Programmes) and then as Director of Programmes when the Nigerian Broadcasting Service became the NBC, a corporation modelled on BBC lines. He lived in Nigeria with his wife Margot and daughter Sara for three years before returning to Britain as Head of the BBC's Radio Training Section in London. He retired in 1972.

The Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation was set up by the BBC in c. 1951 to implement, on behalf of the federal authorities, a nationwide system of radio broadcasting.
