Biographical / Historical
Henry Neville 'Mick' Southern (1908-1986), ornithologist, was Senior Research Officer at the Department of Zoological Field Studies in Oxford and editor of The Handbook of British Mammals (1964), the journal Bird Study (1954–1960) and the Journal of Animal Ecology (1968–1975). He was Vice-President of the British Ornithologists' Union, 1965-1967; President of The Mammal Society, 1974-1980; and President of the British Ecological Society, 1968-1970.
Obituaries of Henry Southern were published in the Journal of Animal Ecology (1987), vol. 56, 715–717 and Ibis (1987), vol. 129, 281-282.
Arranged as received from the Alexander Library of Ornithology with the exception of:
- Brown spring back album, 'The vegetation of May Island 1936', which was moved from MS. 15483/20 (former reference Series II, Box 7) to MS. 15483/16 (former reference: Series II, Box 3)
- Red notebook containing: bird notes, notes on colour-ringed birds, and a note 'from Wytham Woods', which was moved from MS. 15483/20 (former reference: Series II, Box 7) to MS. 15483/8 (former reference: Series I, Box 10)
- Cassette tape of tawny owl noises recorded by Graham Hirons which was moved from MS. 15483/12 (former reference Series I, Box 14) and boxed separately as MS. 15483/27 (= Closed)
