Abstract
Archive of Vivien Greene
Biographical / Historical
Vivienne Dayrell-Browning was born 1 August 1904. She was a published poet and met Graham Greene whilst working for the publisher Basil Blackwell; he was an undergraduate at Oxford at the time. They married on 15 October 1927 and Vivienne changed her name to Vivien Greene. They had two children; a daughter Lucy Caroline born in 1933 and a son Francis Charles born in 1936. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Vivien and the children moved out of London. Her husband continued to work and live in London visiting his family regularly but his infidelities brought an end to the marriage in 1947. They were both converts to Roman Catholicism and never divorced. Although Vivien gave up paid work when she got married, she developed an interest in dolls' houses during the war and became a collector and an expert in historic dolls' houses, eventually creating a dolls' house museum in Oxford. She died aged ninety-nine in Oxfordshire.
