Held at the Weston Library
Folder 1 (fols. 1-42) 'Disturbances in Palestine, Aug 1929: miscellaneous telegrams IN and OUT', 23-28 Aug 1929:
- containing telegrams (Nos. 103-131) between H.C. Luke, Officer Administering the Government during Chancellor's absence on leave, and the Secretary of State; also, four from Luke to the High Commissioner for Egypt (fol. 2), the Governor of Malta (fols. 3 and 10), and Egypforce, Cairo (fol. 14). The file is marked 'His Excellency's personal file' and would have been seen by him on his return from leave. The telegrams are concerned with the outbreak of the Disturbances, the development of the situation, reinforcements of troops and police, and casualties.
Folder 2: Telegrams to and from the Secretary of State, 29 Aug 1929-31 Mar 1930, 303 fols.:
- originally marked 'Telegrams from the High Commissioner to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, from Aug to Dec 1929', the file bears a later label in Chancellor's hand: 'Telegrams to and from the Secretary of State 28.8.29-31.3.30'
- it contains also miscellaneous telegrams relating to the Disturbances and the steps taken to restore order, between Chancellor and the following: High Commissioners for Egypt and Iraq; British Consuls at Beirut, Damascus, and Naples; British Resident, Kuwait; British Agent, Jedda; Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean, and the Officers commanding the Naval, Army, and Air Force units involved; the Arab Executive, Arab Economic Congress, and certain groups of Arabs.
- pencil notes by Chancellor on the cover of the file, dated 29 Sep 1942, suggest that the alteration in the contents was made when he was drafting his Memoirs. A subject index is pasted inside the cover: the numbers refer to telegrams to the Secretary of State in MSS. Brit. Emp. s. 284/13 (1), folder 1 (Nos. 1-28), as well as in folder 2, which opens with a telegram from Chancellor announcing his return to Palestine.
Folder 3: Telegrams between the Secretary of State and Chancellor, and some correspondence with Shuckburgh and Bentwich, 7 Dec 1929-15 Jul 1931, 46 fols.:
- concerning the retirement of Bentwich from the post of Attorney-General in Palestine and the possible appointment of Drayton as his successor. There is mention of Passfield's wish that Bentwich's retirement be carried out smoothly, of a suggestion that he might be made Chief Justice of Mauritius, and of his appointment to the Chair of International Law in the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. These papers were contained in an envelope marked by Chancellor, 'Position of Mr Bentwich', with a note dated 19 Nov 1943, 'To be used for Memoirs'. (See also MSS. Brit. Emp. s. 284/12 (2), folder 5, fols. 29-84; MSS. Brit. Emp. s. 284/13 (2), MSS. Brit. Emp. s. 284/14 (1), and MSS. Brit. Emp. s. 284/19, MF 8.)
