- (fols. 69-74) from Grigg, to introduce Dr M.J. Rendall, former Headmaster of Winchester, and a draft of Chancellor's reply following Rendall' s visit, with references to Rhodes Scholars. Chancellor also writes of the proposal to separate the Dominions Division from the Colonial Office, giving his own views on how this might be carried out, and referring to Pirie-Gordon's advocacy of the scheme, 16 Oct-13 Dec 1924
- (fols. 75-77) from Jellicoe, after leaving New Zealand, with references to his visits to Admiral de Chair, Governor of New South Wales, and to Lord Forster, Governor-General of Australia, as well as to the recent Election in England and to Churchill's appointment to the Treasury, 27 Dec 1924.
Folder 2: Thirty-four letters from Lord Athlone, Governor-General of South Africa, to Chancellor, 12 Apr 1924-16 Dec 1930. Includes a few drafts and notes of Chancellor's replies. The letters deal with politics and personalities in both territories, with frequent mention of Smuts, Hertzog, Coghlan, and Moffat. Subjects referred to include:
- (fols. 6-10, 86) the question of indigenous populations in South Africa, and Native Reserves
- (fols. 40, 64-68, 77v-78) railway matters, in particular the Railway Commission and the question of Hiley or Hoy as Chairman
- (fols. 69-71, 79-80) the change in the position of the Governor-General of South Africa
- (fols. 26-27, 76-77)the Tati District of Bechuanaland (Botswana) and the future of the British Protectorates
- (fols. 62v, 79, 86, 89, 91, 94) the Flag Bill.
