Stanley had allowed him to see although it had depressed him, owing to the inclusion of the twelve-year apprenticeship measure. She laments the fact that they are not able to fight this too strongly for fear the whole Bill might fail, and for similar reasons Buxton refuses to oppose the payment of compensation; however, the other measures are good. She describes a recent gathering, including Garrison, Captain Elliott, Mr and Mrs William Smith, Dr Lushington, and Joseph Sturge, at which they discussed their different opinions quite amicably, all underlaid by a basic desire for emancipation. She writes that the following day, they attended a meeting called by Elliott Cresson, the Agent of the Colonization Society, which the Duke of Sussex chaired and which was held to promote the idea of founding a colony in Africa [for formerly enslaved people].

She describes a recent visit paid by Garrison, who was shortly to return to America, and mentions her approval of his motives and aims, adding that it was his opinion that the meeting was very suspicious of the aims of Elliott Cresson and the Colonization Society. She relates that Sturge defended [Cresson] as an 'honest downright man', and goes on to use the same words ironically to describe the Duke of Wellington, who had recently and unsuccessfully moved an amendment to the Abolition Bill to omit the words 'liberal and comprehensive' as relating to the proposed education for Black people.
