Another visit by [William Lloyd] Garrison, the anti-slavery activist from America. She describes Garrison's fervent opposition to the Colonization Society and to its agent Elliott Cresson, and his support of the emancipation campaign. She adds that he intends to form an Anti-Slavery Society in the United States and, towards that end, he hopes to take back some English speakers. She writes that Garrison thanked Buxton for his letter [see p. 177], which Buxton had difficulty in remembering, since she herself had written it. She goes on to write that Macaulay joined them at dinner, with the news that Captain Elliott of Demerara (Guyana) had signified the West Indians' acceptance of the provisions of the Abolition Bill, and then William Smith had called in with letters of support for Buxton's actions from Wilberforce and Clarkson [see pp. 181c-189]. She describes the positive effect of these visits and letters on Buxton, although he put more emphasis on Macaulay's news than on the personal praise in the letters. (Copy.)
