Priscilla Buxton to Sarah Buxton and Anna Gurney, about the petitions they had sent in, which were very welcome. She describes the anti-slavery meeting held the previous day at Exeter Hall, chaired by [Samuel] Gurney, at which the address written by Joseph John Gurney was approved, much to Buxton's relief. Later on, coming in from the dinner given to nearly 400 participants, she relates how delegates had come from all parts of the British Isles, representing all professions and sorts of men, including only a few Radicals, whose opinions were heavily outvoted. She goes on to describe how, through Buxton's tact and persuasiveness, everyone deferred to his judgements, making him in effect their leader. She continues the letter on the following day, relating how the delegates had gone in a body to Downing Street, being much admired on the way by [Samuel?] Carr, and then were seen by Lord Althorp and Stanley. She describes the speeches made by [Samuel] Gurney and Buxton in presenting the address, in which they stressed how the whole country was represented by the delegates, and adds that Buxton was, on the whole, pleased by their reception, and by a promise from Stanley not to postpone the [Abolition] Motion again. She goes on to relate the events at the dinner given to all the delegates, at which Buxton spoke of his hopes for the future and his gratitude for all that had already been achieved, especially by [Zachary] Macaulay, whom he named as the real leader of the anti-slavery movement. She expresses her reservations about all the triumphal celebrations, fearing that much more work remains to be done, and finishes by describing a toast proposed by Lord Suffield to the Friends.
