The first 30 pages contain diary entries, 16 Dec 1858-12 Apr 1859, including (pp. 5-14) an account of the exploration of Marawe and Maruka districts, 14 Feb-3 Mar 1859. Pagination starts again, pp. 1-142, consisting entirely of geological notes.

Diary continues from the other end of the volume, beginning 26 Mar 1860. There are a number of insertions.
