Also about his own failure to carry the same arguments with their influential friends and his belief that he did not have enough practical knowledge to initiate the scheme Forster had described or judge its probable outcome. He raises a number of points on practical considerations, which he thought Forster had not taken into account. He promises to support the scheme financially if others could be persuaded to join it, but refuses to start it himself because he thought more important matters at that time were the drawing up of Instructions and the framing of a model treaty and he saw no reason to sacrifice himself for a scheme with uncertain prospects of success. He would agree to authorise Trotter, Cook, and Bird Allen to purchase land for a settlement and to send word as soon as that had been done, whereupon he thought the government could be persuaded to give assistance. Public support would also be forthcoming on receipt of a favourable report and the delay should only be of six months. He warns against trying to institute the agricultural part of their plan in too great a hurry, pointing out the damage that could be done to the whole scheme if it failed, adding that the success of the expedition depended on the care with which it was fitted out and that the delay already suffered had in the end been of benefit. He claims that he would not hold back if men of sound experience supported his nephew, but he mentions James Cook's hesitation and quotes Acland's and Lushington's agreement with him over the acquisition of land.
