Dr R.R. Madden from Havana to Buxton, about the poem and his reasons for writing it, the entertainment of Forcade on H.M.S. Romany, the quarrel that ensued between Jenkins, the host, and Kennedy, who was trying to make him a scapegoat in a test case over those engaged in the slave trade being entertained on British ships, and his own attempt to smooth matters over. This failed because Jenkins had already written to the Admiral asking that an inquiry be held into the affair and was determined to go through with it. Madden asks Buxton to impart the details he had written to Sir George Grey. He also reports on the financial involvement of Rothschild in the payment of interest on a loan from Spain to the Intendant of Havana and the effect any attack on slavery and the slave trade would have on that financial interest, 5 Dec 1838.
