At a meeting at Samuel Gurney's, it was decided that Lushington should write to Lord John Russell asking that the government build the steamers, that they should write to Jamieson to find out the terms on which he would undertake to be a commissioner, that Cook and Scoble be asked whether they would go and on what terms, and that no final decision be taken on anything until Buxton himself arrived on Wednesday morning. William Forster adds his description of the meeting, supplementing Lushington's notes, adding that he had consulted Sam Gurney on the possibility of his going on the expedition as the prospect of Cook and Scoble going was so uncertain; a word from Buxton would settle the matter as he was not at all sure about it. He describes Buxton's post, mentions that he was suffering from influenza, and tells him the Wednesday meeting would be at Samuel Gurney's, at 10.30 am.
