William Hutton to Colonel Nicholls, asking whether he wished to have his name associated with the circular of the West African Anti-Slavery Association, which had just been sent to him; if he did not, he would arrange for it to be removed from the circular. If he did, Welsh would certainly be glad to see him. He adds that he hoped to see Becroft that afternoon, 5 Oct 1838
Robert Stokes to Buxton about the circular, describing Hutton as having been employed first by the old African Company and then by the government, by whom he was dismissed. He mentions that Colonel Nicholls was annoyed at his name being coupled with the West Africa Anti-Slavery Association, but that Hutton assured him that its circulation would be suspended. Stokes claims to have failed to discover who the members of this Association might be, although he suspects that they are the Committee for Managing the Forts on the Gold Coast. He had extracted from the Missionary Register articles on the slave trade and Africa which might be of use to him, asks whether he should send them, and whether he should catalogue the contents of the African Institution Reports under the same headings as he had employed for the Parliamentary Papers, 10 Oct 1838.
